Toyota clearly displays its future plan: “We will produce millions and millions of electric cars”

For several years, Toyota has confirmed its refusal to present itself as a 100% electric company in the years to come. The brand’s management instead supported a future strategy called “multi-choice”. This is the ability to offer all possible mechanical options and allow the customer to choose based on their particular interests.

This is why the company currently only has one electric car in its ranks, the bZ4X, unlike its closest rivals who have already far outstripped it in this area. But what will happen to the brand in the years to come in terms of electric vehicles? Greenworks was able to speak with Gill Pratt, president of the Toyota Research Institute, who gave important indications on the future of the Japanese firm.

Toyota will produce electric cars, but also other engines.

He spoke about Toyota’s vision for the future. He particularly highlighted thecommitment to hydrogen vehicles. Mr. Pratt assures that the company has the necessary resources to develop this technology, as well as to install refueling stations. However, the bottleneck lies in welcoming potential customers.

Regarding hydrogen technology, he gives an example: “15 or 20 years ago, we didn’t know that lithium-ion batteries would be so good and so cheap. At the time, we didn’t think electric vehicles would become so practical. In other words, hydrogen may not be seen as a future today, but in a few years, that view could change significantly.

“Until about ten years ago, the use of electric cars was not viable, but today it seems that it is. That is why we have changed our strategy a lot and we are going to produce millions and millions of electric cars. But we are not sure yet and maybe in 10 years something will change and something different will happen. So we continue to explore different avenues. The future is uncertain,” Pratt continued.

As is well known, Toyota is investing heavily in the development of electric technology in the coming years. The Japanese company will launch its new

solid-state batteries at the end of the decade, with the clear goal of offering up to 1,200 kilometers of range for its electric cars.
