Golfech in the running to join the EPR 2 program with two new reactors

As part of the revitalization of nuclear energy in France, the Golfech nuclear center, located in Tarn-et-Garonne, is emerging as a major player thanks to the unanimous support of local decision-makers and regional economic forces. The current objective is to expand the capacities of this site by installing two new reactors, part of the innovative EPR 2 program. This ambition is not accidental but is anchored in a long-term strategic vision.

Jean-Michel Baylet, influential president of the community of communes of Deux-Rives, highlighted this perspective during his speech in Valence-d’Agen, on the occasion of the traditional greeting ceremony. Highlighting the pivotal role of Cyril Hisbacq, director of the Golfech CNPE, Mr. Baylet expressed firm support for the expansion of the site. He clearly displayed the common desire to realize the construction of two new production units, in close collaboration with the president of the GIE Atlantique, illustrating a proactive and unified approach.

This initiative is part of an ambitious national context, where the President of the Republic has already announced the start of work on six innovative reactors, located in Penly, Gravelines and Bugey, each hosting a pair of reactors of this new generation. The budget allocated to these installations amounts to nearly 50 billion euros, but the government does not intend to stop there and is targeting the construction of 14 reactors in total.

With these prospects, Golfech aspires to play a key role in the second phase of the EPR 2 program, hoping to be among the four sites selected for this major development. It is crucial to remember that the Golfech project, initiated under the presidency of François Mitterrand, was already visionary, originally envisaging four units for this site. Today, with the revival of nuclear power in France, Golfech is preparing to strengthen its footprint in the national energy landscape.
