New Volkswagen Golf 2024: minor facelift for the MK8.5 generation

  • The new Volkswagen Golf 2024 arrives with many new features. More power for the GTI, new hybrid models and a range of 100 kilometers for plug-in hybrids.
  • The multimedia system has been revised, with the return of physical buttons on the steering wheel and a larger screen.

The Volkswagen Golf was launched 50 years ago. The benchmark compact car in Europe, which has already sold more than 34 million units and which is being modernized this year with the new generation. A version that, if we follow the familiar way of calling these models, we can call the Golf MK8.5.

Volkswagen is moving forward on the path to electrification with its flagship model and this time, in addition to classic gasoline and diesel engines, mild hybrids and plug-in hybrids with up to 100 kilometers of autonomy have been added to the range, thanks to an update of their mechanics.

Slight exterior changes and interior improvement

As is often the case for these intermediary generations, the aesthetic changes are not radical but perceptible. Both in compact cars and in the Golf estate. To begin with, we notice the new emblem of the brand illuminated at the front of the car, which combines perfectly with the infinite light that connects the two headlights.

The new Volkswagen Golf is now equipped as standard with LED headlights with Matrix LED IQ.LIGHT technology which can illuminate up to 500 meters at night. At the rear, the new 3D effect headlights offer a welcome and farewell animation that can be personalized in three different ways.

The front bumper has been modified with a new lower part and new sides. In the case of the Volkswagen Golf GTI and GTE, the badges have been transferred to letters on the doors. Four new colors are also offered: Crystal Ice Blue metallic, Anemone Blue metallic, Oyster Silver metallic and Granadilla Black metallic, as well as five new 19-inch wheels.

But it’s inside where the new 2024 Volkswagen Golf stands out. Thanks to the return of physical buttons on the steering wheel and the MIB4 operating system, which will be displayed on two optional multimedia screens: one of 10.4 inches and the other of 12.9 inches. With fast, intuitive use and exciting new features like the customizable top bar of shortcuts.

Finally, the design of the multimedia menus and the animations of the digital dashboard have been radically improved. Finally, below the touch screen, the control sliders are now backlit and more sensitive.

The powertrains have also been updated, refining the combustion engines and improving the capabilities of the hybrid models. All aim to cover most of the current market demand.

For starters, the mild hybrids get the 1.5 eTSI engine (also called 1.5 TSI evo2), which is paired with a 48V architecture and a 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox to produce 115 or 150 hp. Always front-wheel drive, as with all models.

On the other hand, plug-in hybrids are divided between the VW Golf eHybrid and the VW Golf GTE. The first develops 204 hp and the second 272 hp. Both are associated with a 6-speed eDSG automatic gearbox. They will be equipped with a new 19.7 kWh battery with a range of 100 kilometers. In addition, they can be recharged from 11 kW in alternating current or up to 50 kW in direct current.

Golf diesels will continue to be powered by the 2.0 TDI and there will be a choice of 115bhp with a manual or 150bhp automatic transmission.

Other new features include driver assistance systems (ADAS) such as Park Assist Pro, which allows you to park or unlock the car remotely using your smartphone, and Area View, which provides a view 360º thanks to four different cameras.
