If directors are the authors of a film, what to make of the casting directors who, time and again, discover actors and place them in the memorable roles that have come to define the movies we love? In his wildly entertaining new documentary CASTING BY, Tom Donahue takes us through the history of the casting director, especially the pioneering work of Marion Dougherty, who discovered some of the greatest actors of our time. Featuring interviews with Al Pacino, Robert Redford, Woody Allen, Robert DeNiro and more, CASTING BY stakes a claim for the forgotten heroines behind our favorite films.

  1. Heroines? Just because most casting directors are women doesn’t mean we should ignore pioneers such as Mike Fenton, Billy Hopkins and Lynn Stalmaster. To refer to CDs as heroines diminishes the contribution by the many casting “heroes” in the profession.
