Recent data on Volvo’s electric truck fleet reveals that they have traveled more than 80 million kilometers in commercial traffic around the world since 2019. Traveling this same distance with equivalent diesel trucks would have consumed more than 25 million liters of diesel and generated 68,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.
I am happy to see that transportation companies are integrating the benefits of electric trucks into their daily operations. The transportation sector accounts for 7% of global carbon emissions, and battery-electric trucks are an important tool for reducing the climate footprint. Thanks to many pioneers, we can already see the enormous potential of this technology.

5 years of experience in electrical technology
Volvo’s early entry into the electric truck segment has allowed it to develop unique expertise in zero-emission electric transportation, knowledge that is being used in the development of Volvo’s next generation of electric offerings.
Transportation companies that use electric trucks have a significant competitive advantage by being able to offer their customers emissions-free transportation. Maximizing the use of electric truck investment and charging infrastructure makes a strong business case for transport companies, optimizing logistics and driving routes, and sharing charging facilities between operators . Additionally, the benefits of electric trucks go beyond environmental gains, as drivers benefit from a significantly more pleasant working environment, with significantly lower noise and vibration levels.
A growing global presence
Volvo’s global electric truck deliveries increased 256% to 1,977 trucks in 2023, and the company expects continued interest from customers in 2024. In Europe, more than half of electric truck customers have chosen a Volvo during the first quarter of this year, with a 56% share of the electric truck segment. In the United States, Volvo accounted for 44% of all electric trucks sold.
To date, Volvo has delivered more than 3,500 electric trucks to customers in 45 countries on six continents. In 2023, Volvo Trucks strengthened its presence in the electric truck market by delivering its first heavy-duty electric trucks to Latin America, with vehicles destined for customers in Brazil, Chile and Uruguay. Volvo also became the first truck manufacturer to deliver electric heavy-duty trucks to Morocco, South Korea and Malaysia.
Transport companies, but also buyers of transport and logistics services, are joining the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi) and are starting to demand sustainable transport solutions from their suppliers. This is another driver of the transition to electric trucks.
