Lufthansa CEO concerned about reduced routes in Germany

Carsten Spohr, CEO of Lufthansa, expressed concern that other airlines could reduce their routes to Germany due to excessive increases in fares and costs. Following recent route cuts by airlines such as Eurowings and Ryanair, Mr Spohr warns this could have a negative impact on Germany as a business centre.

Speaking to the German newspaper Bild am Sonntag, Mr. Spohr pointed out that the extreme increase in state costs related to air traffic was leading to a decline in services. “I am very concerned about the connectivity of our business locations,” he said, noting that more and more airlines are avoiding German airports or canceling important routes.

Several airlines, including Eurowings And Ryanair, have already canceled numerous flights in the country, citing prices that are too high. Mr. Spohr also criticized planned future government regulations, such as blending quotas for synthetic fuels (e-fuels), which are not yet available in sufficient quantities. According to the Lufthansa CEO, these measures affect the competitiveness of German airports and harm the quality of connectivity in important international economic regions.

Ryanair has announced that it will cease operations at three German airports – Dortmund, Dresden and Leipzig – from summer 2025, citing high taxes and fees as the main reasons. It will also reduce flights from Hamburg by 60% and those from Berlin by 20%.

Eurowings, a subsidiary of Lufthansa, will also reduce its capacity in Hamburg. Jens Bischof, CEO of Eurowings, indicated that, initially, more than 1,000 flights will be canceled by 2025.

The growing disconnection of German airports and rising costs for airlines represent a major challenge for the country as a key node in international air traffic.
