V8 Supercars Champion Will Davison Reveals Why Championship Points Don’t Matter: “Focus is on Race-by-Race Performance”

Will Davison, the two-time Bathurst 1000 champion, is currently navigating a challenging season as he sits 17th in the championship standings, 195 points away from the top 10 with just three rounds left before the finals.

Current Standing and Outlook

Davison has described his season as “a bit of a disaster,” but he remains committed to avoiding excuses during this rebuilding year for his team. His new teammate, Brodie Kostecki, is performing well, currently sitting sixth in the standings and on track to qualify for the finals. Meanwhile, Davison is among several drivers hoping for a strong enduro campaign to turn his season around.

Focus on the Future

Despite the challenges, Davison emphasizes his desire to finish the year strong rather than simply aiming to make the finals. “I’d much rather finish the year getting some big results than scraping into the top 10 in the points. I couldn’t really care,” he told Speedcafe. He acknowledges the importance of the finals but prioritizes consistent performance and team functionality as they head into the latter half of the season.

Team Dynamics and Expectations

Davison is optimistic about the team’s direction, expressing excitement for the second half of the year. “It’s been more frustrating than I would have hoped but we’ve got great people, great energy within the team and we’re going in a really good direction,” he stated. Furthermore, he is one of the few drivers outside of the finals spots who is not concerned about the upcoming Supercars silly season, thanks to his long-term contract with DJR, confirmed by team boss David Noble.

Commitment to the Team

Having renewed his contract for 2026, Davison is focused on contributing to the team’s success during this pivotal rebuilding phase. “We don’t need that distraction right now; we’ve got too much other stuff we need to get right,” he said, highlighting the high expectations within the team.

Recent Performance

In 2025, Davison has achieved only one podium finish, which occurred at Taupo in April. As he prepares for the upcoming Ipswich Super440, he reflects on his previous success at Queensland Raceway, where he ended a 1021-day podium drought in July 2019 while driving for 23Red Racing.
