Michael Dunaway on Renaissance SRQ

I’m very excited to be writing for the Backlot, and was thrilled to have our intrepid Sarasota Film Festival creative director Michael Dunaway on my radio show Renaissance SRQ on WSLR 96.5 LPFM. Cutting right to the chase, I asked him about why homelessness was chosen as a central theme this year to discover that it was an idea that Mark Famiglio started developing during last year’s festival. We also discussed the role of film in creating social change, which is especially poignant, considering this year’s theme and the challenges that Sarasota faces in its struggle to overcome it. It is encouraging that City Manager Tom Barwin recently announced the City of Sarasota’s 8 step plan to handle this issue, and many hope that by sharing these films through the Sarasota Film Festival, we can create a greater sense of awareness and foster more understanding for those who are experiencing homelessness. Since Saturday has a huge lineup of films about homelessness, it will be a busy day at the movies for me. But from what Michael says of some of the films, this is going to be a busy week for everybody. Once we got through the serious stuff, I asked Michael, who has an incredible encyclopedic knowledge of this year’s line up, about some of the other films, the conversations, and what makes the Sarasota Film Festival his favorite even before he was hired. Keep checking back in to The SRQ Backlot to find out more about this year’s film festival and what we can come away with. https://www.mixcloud.com/widget/iframe/?embed_type=widget_standard&embed_uuid=9932cd61-3c81-4a71-925b-484c24e4b48a&feed=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.mixcloud.com%2Finkensoul%2Fthe-sarasota-film-festival-rundown-with-creative-director-michael-dunaway%2F&hide_cover=1&hide_tracklist=1&replace=0
