Forget Sundance. A new film festival organized by Inspiration Academy in Bradenton could become the first festival of note within Southwest Florida’s filmmaking community, Inspiration Film Fest. With a line-up of films from around the world and an appearance by Lawrence Gilliard, Jr., of The Walking Dead fame, the Jan. 17 event is grabbing attention from the outset.

VIDEO: Daniel Landers shoots video for ‘Love Me Tonight’ in Sarasota

A music video shot in Sarasota could be what gives Daniel Landers his first dose of success stateside. The video “Love Me Tonight,” a single Landers is currently shopping to U.S. labels, has garnered more than 10,000 hits on YouTube. “It was kind of a renegade film project,” Landers said. “We put a lot of effort and fun into it.”

Sarasota Film Festival Screening Elf To Kick Off Moonlight Movies

A screening of the holiday classic Elf on Dec. 22 by Payne Park will kick off the Sarasota Film Festival’s Moonlight Movies series this year. The movie will be projected against the side of the Sarasota Police headquarters downtown, and the police department will co-host the event as part of the new Blue+Movies+You Program.

The free event will also feature an appearance by comedian Les McCurdy, being billed as “Sarasota’s favorite Elf,” and food will be gathered as part of The Mayors Feed The Hungry campaign in Sarasota and for All Faiths Food Bank.

‘Epic’ is a word that gets thrown around online, and certainly YouTube isn’t shy about the term. But getting prominent placement in an annual YouTube Rewind video should count as an epic accomplishment, especially for a celebrity like Michelle Phan who bases her fame capital on the metrics of the web.

In its “YouTube Rewind: Turn Down for 2014” video, YouTube included Phan, famous for her web tutorials on applying make-up, in multiple scenes, most prominently in a montage of web celebs like PewtiePie and the Fine Bros. getting doused in an homage to the Ice Bucket Challenge; Phan manages to be the only one to avoid the fashion faux pas on having ice water make your mascara run.
