After years as a stunt woman in some of the biggest action movies in the last 20 years, Danielle Burgio is taking on a truly dangerous job: directing. Burgio is in Sarasota with her short Lucy Falls. She and husband/producer Robert Merrill (a Sarasotan whose last name should be well known on the Suncoast) spoke with SRQ about the film, which will play this week in front of the feature film Nothing Without You.
Burgio may not be a face that filmgoers immediately recognize, but they have probably seen her in action before. She has done stunt work in The Matrix Reloaded, The Matrix Revolutions, The Green Mile and numerous other major features. She also has acted in small parts in The Amazing Spider-man, The Walking Dead and other film and television projects.
She wears numerous hats in Lucy Falls: writer, director, lead actress.
The short film is the story of a woman in an absive relationship who has an epiphany about her situation through he help of a 17-year-old friend, Burgio says. The idea of tackling a feature about abuse seemed a good fit to her because of her stunt background, but was also a interesting emotional substance to tackle.
“I was attracted to idea of domestic violence,” she said.
Merrill jumps in to say what the story is not about, though. “It is not an autobiography,” he stresses. The happily-married-and-definitely-not-hitting-one-another couple serve as co-producers on the film.
Lucy Falls screens today, April 6, at 6:45pm and Sunday, April 7 at 12:45pm at the Regal Hollywood 20.
