A program created by students and staff from the NYU Tisch School of the Arts will be showcased for the first time at this year’s Sarasota Film Festival. SFF officials today announced a partnership with NYU. Officials with the festival hope the event will provide an “interdisciplinary platform for members of our community and the film industry to engage with outstanding from from NYU Tisch School of the Arts students and alumni.”
“We are proud that they (NYU) have chosen our festival as a home for their filmmakers,” says Sarasota Film Festival Board President Mark Famiglio. “Over the past several years, we have developed a vibrant relationship with NYU Tisch School of the Arts and we are excited to announce this formal partnership.”
Indeed, it was Tisch administrators who MC’d an Investors Lab held at the Sarasota Film Festival in 2010, and there have been numerous NYU-related attendees of the festival, either those in town with their own films or those representing the university for events at SFF. As it happens, the Opening Night Film, Centerpiece Film and Closing Night Film at this year’s event, all announced earlier, were written, directed or produced by NYU alumni.
And, of course, one of the major players in the SFF for years has been Robert Warren, a member of the Tisch Dean’s Council and NYU graduate film adjunct festival. “I am very proud of the MFA and combination MBA/MFA students who have taken on this project with such enthusiasm,” says Warren, an SFF board member. “Their passion for programming such a thoughtful series of films will be reflected in the success of the partnership.”
Tisch Dean Mary Schmidt Campbell said the experience has been “unparalleled experience” for students, who get to both curate the festival program and share their own work with audiences here.
