Empowering a New Generation of Thelmas

A filmography that ranges from the campy Earth Girls Are Easy to Oscar-winning The Accidental Tourist was discussed at length at the “In Conversation with Geena Davis” event at Sarasota High School this afternoon.”

At the event, Davis discussed the way films like Thelma and Louise changed her from being an occasionally-recognized celebrity to feminist figure with women cheering at her from passing vehicles.

She continues her efforts to empower women, now focusing on the youngest of viewers in America. The Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media is trying to raise awareness of the lack of female characters and positive role models for girls in youth-oriented films.
