No political dynasty in America has inspired as much interest as the Kennedys. At the Sarasota Film Festival, one of the clan’s own, Rory Kennedy, will be here with a documentary that gives some inside perspective on he family dynamics. Her film Ethel specifically looks at her own mother, wife to Bobby Kennedy.

USA Today called the documentary a “spirited high point” of the Sundance festival this year. The piece includes interviews with the famously private Ethel Kennedy done with her daughter over five days. Even Rory concedes she had trouble getting her mom to talk, but there were such details revealed as the way Bobby slid down White House bannisters after his brother John became president.

Of course, we all know the days of Camelot closed in tragedy when John was killed, and were followed up not long after with Bobby’s assassination. Ethel seemed on the road to becoming first lady when her husband was gunned down. Since then, she has stayed out of public view.

So the film is certain to generate some significant discussion, which is why the movie is among those being discussed in the Film Lovers Forum series.

Those who attend the April 15 screening can make a whole evening out of this film. Ethel screens at 6:45pm. Rory Kennedy is in town, so expect a Q&A in the theater. Then the audience goers can go to Applebee’s next door for the Forum event at 8:45pm for a discussion moderated by Jacob Ogles of SRQ Mag Backlot. Yes, that’s me!.

I promise we will have a lively discussion on personalities, politics and whatever else you as viewers bring to the conversation. Rory Kennedy is not expected to attend, but those who want to hear more of what she has to say can see her at an In Conversation event on April 16.
